      Negligent hospital liable for widow’s depression and PTSD

      Lily suffered depression and PTSD after her husband, Albert, died in hospital. By proving the hospital staff were negligent, we helped Lily secure compensation for her psychiatric injury.

      Before his death, Albert attended the hospital with calf pain, shortness of breath and a rapid heart rate. He was discharged after 2 ½ hours.

      He returned the next day with similar symptoms. Tests showed evidence of a major blood clot and right heart strain. Shortly after, Albert died of a heart attack.

      Lily lapsed into severe depression and PTSD following Albert’s death. Our Medical Negligence team helped her make a claim for psychiatric injury. This included loss of financial support and domestic services.

      As part of the claim, our expert emergency physician confirmed that Albert received negligent treatment during both visits to the emergency department. Albert would not have suffered the heart attack if proper investigations been carried out.

      The matter was resolved at mediation for the sum of $900,000.
