      When Jade was still a young girl, her mother married her stepfather. Jade and her stepfather shared a close father-daughter relationship, and she grew up thinking of him as her father.

      The parents agreed that, in the event of one of their deaths, the estate would go to the surviving spouse. When that spouse passed away, the estate would become Jade’s inheritance.

      When her mother then passed away, her stepfather’s estranged brother reentered his life. He convinced the grieving widow to change his will, cutting Jade out and leaving the entire estate to him.

      Given her late mother and stepfather’s wishes, Jade was shocked to learn her stepfather’s brother was now the sole beneficiary.

      When Jade came to see us for advice, we obtained statements from neighbours and close friends of both parents. These provided evidence that the stepfather’s brother had not visited him in over twenty years. They also illustrated the relationship between Jade and her stepfather, proving he would never have denied Jade her fair inheritance.

      At mediation, our team successfully resolved Jade’s dispute. She was awarded $350,000 (30% of the estate).
