Choosing the Right Lawyer: Why Accreditation Matters in Personal Injury Law

Kelly Keane, a partner at Monaco Solicitors and an accredited specialist, explains the significance of the accreditation scheme provided by the Law Society of New South Wales. This scheme, which spans 13 practice areas including personal injury, helps assure the public and other professionals of a lawyer’s expertise. Monaco Solicitors boasts three accredited specialists in personal injury, each with over 20 years of experience. These specialists not only handle cases but also supervise other solicitors and continually update their skills. Being an accredited specialist requires additional study each year beyond the standard legal education, ensuring they maintain their high level of expertise.

My name is Kelly Keane. I’m a partner at Monaco Solicitors, and I’m also an accredited specialist as well. The Law Society of New South Wales provides an accredited specialist scheme, and it’s across about 13 different practice areas. Of course, there are a lot of lawyers that practice in the area of personal injury. Only some of them are accredited specialists. We have quite a number of accredited specialists here at Monaco’s in personal injury.

The reason why the law Society provides this accreditation scheme is to give members of the public and other professionals that level of reliability, knowing that someone has a certain expertise in a certain area. You don’t just practice in the area. You know it well, you know it intricately. And it is a way of just sort of providing that assurance to the public, that reliability factor that, “Hey, these people who have this accreditation know what they’re doing.”

Monaco Solicitors has three accredited specialists in personal injury. Those accredited specialists have 20 years and more experience, and they’re also involved in actually supervising other solicitors in the practice as well, and keeping their skills up to date. So it’s helpful. And in addition to that, when you are an accredited specialist, it means that every year you have to do additional levels of study. Every single year, in addition to your usual continuing legal education that all solicitors would do. Accredited specialists have to do another layer on top of that every year to keep their certification.
