      Hannah’s Story

      Hannah had an implant put into her arm as a contraceptive, but after experiencing heavy bleeding, she went back to the doctor to have it removed. However, the doctor made a mistake and hit a nerve, causing further injury. Hannah underwent surgery to correct the issue. As a result of the complications, Hannah experienced depression and turned to drinking and gambling.       Hannah:
      I had gone to a doctor in Kogarah and I’d ask him to put an implant into my arm as a contraceptive. About a year and a half down the track it was funny that I was getting heavy bleeding, so we thought, “Oh, well, I’ll go back to the doctors and see if I can remove the implant.”

      It’s only supposed to be sitting just under the skin but she went two centimetres down, so that’s where she hit the nerve. And when she did do the second cut, it actually went further and sort of partially injured the nerve. I definitely knew there was something dramatically wrong by the next day, I was in surgery.

      Very difficult in regards to my husband and my son, knowing the changes that were occurring with me and the depression I started to drink a bit more than what I should be. Money that I got, I was trying to gamble. When an uncontrolled accident occurs, what do you do?

      Leon Monaco:
      I said to her when she first came to see me that unfortunately this GP was negligent and it had very, very serious consequences for the rest of her life.

      Hannah:
      We needed someone valued in that profession to be able to be strong.

      Leon Monaco:
      I was just as concerned as she was, and I knew that we had to do something.

      Hannah:
      A couple of times he was able to help me professionally and getting funds.

      Leon Monaco:
      She was finding it difficult to make her mortgage payments and so on. We used a law that allows us in certain circumstances to request an upfront payment of part of the settlement money even before the case is finished, and that’s what we did in this case.

      Hannah:
      He took some real big financial relief off us when we were able to get some money back into our pockets.

      Leon Monaco:
      Eventually, we had a meeting with the insurance company and we negotiated a very substantial settlement for Hannah. She was very happy with it.

      Hannah:
      It’s just like a weight off our shoulders to finally say, “Yay, it’s over.”

      Leon Monaco:
      I just hope that this has made a difference to her life.

      Hannah:
