Learn moreKate developed permanent kidney damage after her GP failed to properly manage her high blood pressure. She was told she’d need a kidney transplant. The GP argued that no treatment could have intervened, but we proved they were negligent.
Her GP had treated Kate for high blood pressure for 10 years. He failed to refer Kate to a specialist when her kidney’s began failing. She was unaware of the severity of her condition until she presented to hospital with extremely high blood pressure. Kate was diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney disease. She needed urgent dialysis and was put on the kidney transplant list. The dialysis left Kate very weak and unable to carry out day-to-day activities.
We worked with a kidney expert to establish the nature of Kate’s disabilities and her loss of earning capacity. Key to the case was whether better management from the GP would have led to a different outcome.
The GP argued that Kate would have required dialysis regardless of their actions. However, our experts estimated that with proper treatment Kate would not have need dialysis for another 20–25 years.
The matter settled at mediation where we secured a settlement of $790,000. Kate and her family were very grateful for the outcome.
